I bought a Guira today...in the DR it's basically just a steel can with a handle, the surface of which is covered in little bumps... you use what looks like an Afro Pick to scrape the side- it is one of the key ingredients in Merengue music. We spent yesterday outside of the enormous, frenzied city of Santo Domingo in a beautiful small town called Bani'. The drive was incredible, weaving through enormous mountains rising straight out of the Caribbean. Our driver, Wellington, is a madman and a genius (as a driver of course) Calmly whipping our large tour van past small motorcycles holding entire families with 2 inches of clearance.
